5 Things You Can Think at Work, But Shouldn’t Say
For the past 2, maybe 3, weeks I have been dealing with some work-related burnout that I’m sure is related to some sour office vibes. We all know negativity is like wildfire, and even the slightest hint of it can upset co-workers and clients so much that they have steam coming out of their ears.
Before and when times get tense, there are a couple thoughts I refrain from saying out loud. Unfortunately, not everyone feels and thinks the same, so I thought I’d share them here so you can preserve your professionalism, and add to the office moral instead of not.
5 Things You Can Think at Work, But Shouldn’t Say:
F *** (especially with the “you” after it)
I know it’s 2017, and the world is changing and this word is so loosely used, but use that college or graduate degree to show you can actually convey your distaste or disagreements intelligently. Plus, F*** is so angry. Angry people have few friends.
“I’m not doing that.”
There are always tasks that are inconvenient, tedious, or boring. That’s life. But, skipping out on menial tasks, doesn’t build your strength to handle harder things later on. Chances are, you’ll be overlooked for more challenging, door-opening opportunities because you were literally too lazy to hold the door open for someone else to complete their job or keep business running smoothly.
“____ is such a ____.”
Wow is it hard, but we aren’t in 7th grade anymore, and office gossip never solved anyone’s problems, as far as I’ve heard. Hold fast to the Golden Rule on this one, and try to remember that if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
“Are you pregnant?”
Just don’t. At the office. In the break room. At lunch. Or anywhere. Better not to ask and just let that information come out naturally. (Oh geez, is that a pun. I’m terrible).
“(Your opinion) + not to be rude, but…”
Hold the phone there, sister (or brother). Chances are if you have to tack this phrase onto your thought process, you probably – how do my kid client’s say – need to “backspace, backspace, delete.” Shout out to my little man, Isaac (age 7) for that one!
